What is LSPI?
LSPI stands for Low Speed Pre-Ignition, which occurs in direct injection and downsized turbo engines under low-speed, high-load conditions. It refers to early ignition (combustion of fuel before spark plug ignition) caused by a different ignition source.
Engine damage caused by LSPI has become a concern. One of the causes is the mixing of fuel injected into the combustion chamber with oil on the chamber walls. The mixture of oil and fuel scraped up by piston rings, as well as deposits (incomplete combustion products) formed from the combustion of these droplets, can become the source of early ignition. In May 2018, the latest API SN PLUS specification was implemented, which includes ‘LSPI prevention performance’ as a standardized requirement.
